Ron Speaker

Founder & CEO

Ron is a bond market veteran and CFA charterholder with over 31 years of investment experience covering a wide variety of fixed income instruments. He enjoyed a successful 21 year career at Janus Capital Group rising from a young analyst to a seasoned portfolio manger overseeing $2.5 billion in mutual fund and private account assets. His flagship fund, Janus Flexible Income fund, achieved a lifetime ranking in the top decile of all Flexible Income Funds ranked by Lipper Analytical.

After moving to the mountains to enjoy a more rural lifestyle in 2007, he founded Equus to focus exclusively on the Colorado Municipal market. Ron identified a unique and under-researched market segment that allows Equus to bring value to its high net worth clients.

Ron lives on a gentlemen’s ranch with his wife, twin boys, two horses, two dogs, two cats and
six chickens.

Matt Owings

Partner & Chief Compliance Officer

Matt received a bachelor’s degree in Finance from the University of Kansas and is a CFA charterholder. With over nine years of experience, his primary responsibilities include portfolio management, trading and oversight of our firm’s compliance program. Matt is a seasoned municipal analyst having visited over 100 individual credits in our state.

He enjoys the outdoors, spending time with his wife and daughters, and is an avid Jayhawk fan. Matt is also on the board of Youth Entity, a non-profit providing financial education and real world career experiences to kids throughout the Western Slope of Colorado.

Scott Hanley


Scott received his bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Colorado State University in 2010. Scott adds his experience in Colorado’s public policy sector to Equus’ research team. His primary responsibilities include conducting issuer specific research and monitoring electronic trading sites for bid wanted situations. Scott is currently a Level lll candidate in the CFA program.

Scott is quick to suggest the best coffeeshops if you are headed to any number of Colorado’s rural towns. Outside the office, he enjoys anything that involves swimming, biking and running – preferably in that order.
